BRFC Sri Lanka Tour

Almost 60 stalwart and very tired members of Bahrain Rugby Football Club returned to Bahrain late on Tuesday after an extremely successful 5 day tour of Colombo.

Mike Cunningham, Chairman of BRFC, remarked ‘ We started off on Thursday evening with a farewell by Gulf Air who made our flights from and to Bahrain very smooth indeed including the group check in. A special group deal on our flights to Colombo was one of the catalysts that increased the number of tourists travelling.’

‘As this was the third time we had travelled to Colombo but the first as a full blown BRFC touring party, we were determined to make this tour even more of a memorable occasion’ said Andrew Walsh, Captain of the veteran Golden Oldies Squads.

‘We had raised over BD 6000 in sponsorship and we used these funds to purchase sports and rugby equipment for the following disadvantaged schools in the Colombo area: Carey College, C.W.W. Kannangara, S.D.S. Jayasinghe and Panadura Royal Colleges. We conducted special training camps including mini rugby. It was all really well received by both the kids and also by our intrepid volunteers!!!’

But of course, we did not ignore our own Rugby matches. On the Saturday, we had the honour to play the Sri Lanka Police and despite being over fifteen points down at one stage we battled back and were very unlucky that time ran out at the end with a 31-27 defeat!! The game was memorable not only because we were made to feel honoured guests but also because the last twenty minutes took place in a torrential monsoon, something we were not really used to!!’ Said Andy.

On  Sunday, we played the Sri Lankan Vets team’ the Puffins’ said Cunningham and honour was satisfied as we won 38-21 but it was a tough match. Cunningham added ‘ Even though it was mostly about the kids, we still had time to visit an Elderly Peoples Home as well as the Mother Theresa Home for Children where our volunteers distributed nappies and other essential basics. We had a wonderful time flying the flag not only for Bahrain Rugby Club but also for Bahrain itself and i know it was appreciated very much by our friends, new and old in Sri Lanka!!! We are determined to make it bigger and better next year!!
