The Arabian Celts Ladies returned to Bahrain this week after capping an almost perfect season with yet another victory at the eighth edition of the Middle East Championships in Abu Dhabi over the weekend.
Having attained their number one goal of winning the Ladies Intermediate League title – and with it, promotion to the senior ranks for next season – one could have been forgiven for thinking the team might have let the proverbial foot off the pedal after what has already been the most successful season for any team in the club’s history.
As top seeds, the Celts were pitted straight into a competitive Cup competition on Friday but they maintained their impressive record to make it through to a fifth successive final, where they ultimately came out on top against a strong Abu Dhabi na Fianna side.
Arguably, one of the most satisfying results of the day from the Celts’ point of view was in the naming of defender Steph Hawkins as the Intermediate Ladies’ Player of the Tournament. Despite having only witnessed the game for the first time last September, Sutcliffe has worked tirelessly over the course of the season to become a mainstay at the heart of the team’s defense.
There was yet more to smile about for the Celts’ Ladies, as the Legends team made it all the way to their own final, only to be outdone by a strong na Fianna outfit.
It has been a seriously tough year for the Arabian Celts’ men, as they have battled with the loss of another crop of senior players as well as an increasingly competitive intermediate league. Despite falling short of silverware of their own over the weekend, the famous spirit shown by the Celts and Legends teams will go a long way over the next few months.
